Saxton’s Cornet Band

saxtons

The modern-day Saxton’s Cornet Band has been performing the music of the Civil War era since 1989. Named for an ensemble formed in Lexington, Kentucky, just before the Civil War, Saxton’s Cornet Band stresses historical accuracy, musical excellence, and entertaining performances. The bandsmen strive to demonstrate the variety and quality of the music enjoyed by our mid-19th century ancestors. The original Saxton’s Cornet Band stayed at home during the Civil War, so the modern version often appears in bright red town band style uniforms. Most of the band’s personnel are professional musicians and many are experienced teachers. Saxton’s Cornet Band has performed all across the eastern United States and in Taiwan.

Today, it mainly makes concert hall appearances. The band performed on Pennsylvania Avenue at the 2001 presidential inauguration. Saxton’s Cornet Band has been featured at nearly all of the Great American Brass Band Festivals in Danville, Kentucky. A highlight in the band’s recent history was a standing ovation in Severance Hall following a joint concert with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. The band appeared in the motion pictures Gettysburg and The Day Lincoln Was Shot and currently offers four recordings – Saxton’s Cornet Band, You Naughty Naughty Men, 1861-1865, and Lincoln and Liberty Too!
