Dr. Phillipa Burgess

Dr. Phillipa Burgess is an Assistant Professor at Ohio Dominican University. She holds degrees from the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, California State University, and the University of Kentucky. In addition to teaching, she is director of Ohio Dominican’s chorus program.

Dr. Burgess’ 1997 doctoral dissertation – An Examination of Function, Venue, and Sources in the Repertoire of Mid-Nineteenth Century American Brass Bands – is an extraordinarily thorough examination of what music brass bands actually played during the Civil War era, based upon research into concert programs, band music books, and other period sources.

Her presentation at Cornets & Cannons on band music will be based upon that research too. In addition to her scholarly background in musicology, Dr. Burgess has the benefit of decades of hands-on work in re-creating mid-19th century band music. She was co-founder of Saxton’s Cornet Band in 1989, managed that ensemble for years, and today performs with the Mockingbird Theatre living history musical troupe.
