Nicky Hughes

Nicky Hughes is Curator of Historic Sites for the City of Frankfort, Kentucky. A graduate of Western Kentucky University, he has spent a career in museums and military history. He has been curator of the Kentucky Military History Museum, the Old State Capitol, and the Capital City Museum. He supervises Frankfort’s Fort Hill park.

For over thirty-five years an active Civil War reenactor, he was editor of Camp Chase Gazette and Civil War Historian – both national publications for living history enthusiasts. He has portrayed an infantry private, a staff officer, a battalion commander, a regimental surgeon, and more. He was drum major of Camp Chase Fifes and Drums and has been drum major and announcer for Saxton’s Cornet Band since that ensemble was organized in 1989.

His presentation at Cornets and Cannons will deal with band tactics – how musical ensembles interacted with the combat arms during the Civil War and how that interaction can be re-created by modern-day reenactors.
