This mid-19th century style string band has been formed especially for the Cornets and Cannons festival. The group will be led by Bill Gay and Carl Anderton, two of the most talented, experienced, and historically accurate performers now re-creating this genre of music. The Metropolitan Minstrels will kick off the Friday evening concert at the Grand Theatre, playing just before Saxton's Cornet Band. They will perform entirely on original or accurately reproduced instruments. Modern-day music lovers who are fans of banjo music will enjoy a pleasant surprise at this performance when they hear the soft, etherial sound of the early banjo outfitted with gut strings and skin heads on a wooden frame. Add fiddles, tamborines, bones, and voices for a rousing re-creation of a once enormously popular but nearly lost brand of American music that thrilled audiences in the Civil War era.
