Based in Ohio and named for a Union Army training camp in Ohio, the Camp Chase Fifes and Drums has been performing since 1983. This makes the ensemble one of the longest-lived groups now re-creating music of the Civil War. They portray Civil War era field music – the musicians who regulated and gave rhythm to army life at every level in that pre-electronic era.
The fifers play wooden fifes and the drummers play rope-tensioned drums, all accurately made reproductions. The music comes from 18th and 19th century music manuals. Performing at incredibly varied locations and events from Connecticut to Colorado and from Georgia to Michigan, the group is especially proud of its July 4th, 2000 appearance with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Doc Severenson under Erich Kunzel. The Camp Chase Fifes and Drums participated in the 1985 presidential inauguration and appear in the movies Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. The group belongs to The Company of Fifers and Drummers and has performed for the Percussion Arts Society and the American Patriots Rudimental Drumming Club. Available recordings are Echoes from the Past, Period Pieces, The Civil War, and Above the Clouds.
